In order to create a better life for their people than they had in the isolated and stagnant Middle Ages, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella sought to trade with India and beyond. However, the Portuguese controlled the way around Africa and the Moslem Turks blocked the way due east. Columbus offered them a risky plan to reach the east by sailing west. Desperate to try anything half-way possible to improve Spain after centuries of being under the thumb of Islam, the royal progressives financed the project.

Explorers don't think like the rest of us. They push on pointlessly hoping that they will find something worthwhile, and usually find the journey itself to be fulfilling, whether or not there is something at the end.

The exploration was funded by Spain as a quest to find a quicker route to the far east, but this big hunk of land called the Americas was in the way.
