Well, they are exceptionally slow particularly when you are rushing for time, am I right?
It's a perception - that's what I am trying to say. While there are reasons why Singapore buses cannot be faster, it's also our perceptions and our constant need to hurry that force us to such judgements.
A comparison with many bus services in other countries would reveal that Singapore buses are not that bad after all.
That's my two cents' worth - as a Singaporean.

The buses have to stop every so often to pick up passengers. Plus there is other traffic on the road. Don't forget that the buses travel on public roads, filled with people rushing everywhere.
On the other hand, the train is traveling on railways, and there's nothing in front of the train to slow them down, like traffic. But I like the MRT better, just because...
Anyway, that's my opinion.

Buses are generally run on a pre-set schedule and is subject to changes depending on traffic conditions and weather. Train services are more reliable because they travel on designated tracks. So, trains are faster.

The stops and traffic signals are very close, and also all buses are equipped with auto gear that makes it further slow..

it is because of the traffic lights and the number of bus stops that we have here. and during peak hours its even worse, with lots of cars on the road sometimes the is traffic jam as well, its really slow compared to train...
