There is a fair amount of debate as to the answer to this question. Christopher Columbus is often credited with the discovery of America. However, the Vikings had settlements in Greenland and parts of Canada about 500 years before Columbus got here. They also subsequently abandoned those settlements. On the other hand, when Columbus arrived, there were native people living here, so clearly the ancestors of these indigenous people discovered America before Chris. These native peoples came from Asia, via the Bering Strait (using a land/ice bridge) to Alaska and came south. I cannot say exactly when they arrived, but it was certainly several thousand years before Columbus.

People who didn't record it for history books.
The common answer for the question should it be asked in class is "Christopher Columbus," but of course you might as well answer back with "whoever got here first." After all, there were people in America to greet Columbus, right?

The American Indians have always lived here. Columbus discovered the land that was already inhabited.
