"Dashboard Confessional - Again I Go Unnoticed."

"So quiet.
Another wasted night
The television steals the conversation.
Exhale.
Another wasted breath
again it goes unnoticed."

I believe these lines express regret and/or concern for something lost, and a sense of helplessness. Think of it this way:

The silence in the room is uncomfortable. The two people in front of the television sit motionless. They could go anywhere and do anything they wanted with their time. They could make amends with each other, try to work out their problems, tell each other that they are worried, and generally be honest with each other. Instead they are "wasting" another night staring vacantly at a box. They would rather choose to listen, not think for themselves, and shut out their problems and each other.

Perhaps there is some effort to make conversation, but this effort trails off as they focus on the TV instead. Perhaps the person is afraid of having an argument, afraid that his fears are coming true or that he has done something wrong. The TV is the easier path; it feeds them all the information they need and it neither asks them for anything nor makes them think about their problems. He says he will put off asking until tomorrow, hoping that her mood is only temporary. The TV "steals" his motivation to speak to her.

But why must it be "so quiet?" The narrator is observing with some sadness the silence between them, and the precious possibilities they lose with every passing moment into the void that the television has allowed them to maintain.

Sounds like life in my town.
So quiet - nothing really happening here.
Another wasted night - nothing useful will be accomplished.
The tv steals the conversation - instead of having a useful conversation or anything resembling meaningful, we watch the tv and it tells us what to think, how to feel.

Is that from a song?

Awesome! Dashboard is one of my favorite groups! I like this song too.

The guy and girl are having relationship problems and he's saying this line because they aren't speaking to one another. He's wondering if he's done anything wrong, but doesn't know how to talk to her. Communication has broken down between them. So, he's saying that it's another night where he's come home to her, but the tension is so high between them that they are not talking. Instead, they are ignoring their problems, and watching television.

It means that although they are both there, they were not able to talk because the television prevented communication and so the night was wasted.

if means people could be better spending time not watching tv and do something else. Televisions are making up for what we lack, imagination. You are wasting your time watching it.
