I suppose that we all have to just abide by the consensus from time to time, but consensus don't make truth. For example, the president is elected by a consensus of the American people that one particular person is the best person to lead the country.. But I don't think anyone believes that we have always picked the right guy. So the consensus is sometimes wrong.
It used to be a consensus that the world was flat. but now we know it is round regardless of what people decided in the past.

The consensus used to think that meat could create maggots.
Now we know that the consensus they were wrong.

It isn't until people are willing to test the consensus that advancements get done.

I say for the most part people have to test the consensus as much as it is practical to test it.
