The spray Spot Shot in a dark blue and orange can works great for stains like that. You'll see the stain immediately disappear upon spraying. It's in the same aisle as other carpet cleaning products/stain removers.

Instructions
STEP 1: Try to scrape off as much of the rust as you can with a dull utility knife blade.
STEP 2: Saturate the entire stain with lemon juice (fresh-squeezed or bottled) sprayed from a spray bottle.
STEP 3: Allow the juice to remain for at least 5 minutes, but no longer than 10 minutes.
STEP 4: Blot the stain with a white paper towel. Do not rub the stain in.
STEP 5: Use liquid dishwashing detergent on the stain if the lemon juice doesn't do the trick. Thoroughly mix about 1/4 tsp. detergent with 1 quart of water.
STEP 6: Apply the detergent mixture to a clean, damp, white towel and gently blot the solution into the stained area until the stain is removed.
STEP 7: Spray water onto the area with a spray bottle and blot until the detergent solution and water are gone.
STEP 8: Allow the carpet to dry thoroughly before vacuuming. Tips & Warnings
It's important to use a clean, white towel when blotting the stained area; you don't want dyes from a colored towel to bleed into the carpet.
If the stain has been present for some time and does not come up, contact a professional carpet cleaner.

You have to be careful because rust removers could add to the stain in your carpet. But, here's what I've done before. WHINK liquid rust remover takes rust stains out of clothes and all kinds of things. I've taken rust stains out of my carpet with it. WHINK comes in a brown bottle and can be purchased at most grocery stores or ACE hardware, Target etc.
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS find a hidden place -- like in a closet-- where you can test the WHINK on the carpet to ensure it won't stain.
Squirt the WHINK on the stain and immediately blot with absorbent paper towels or other absorbent cloths. Repeat until the stain disappears. Be sure to blot the carpet until the cloth is no longer damp. Remember a little bit goes a long way. Blotting the stain is the key to effective removal.
