My pal had this. Its called Carpal Tunnel syndrome. There is pressure on the nerves running through your wrist due to swelling. See your doctor for advice. My friend had to get steroid injections and wear splints for a while.

Actually, yes, this is very normal.

Carpal Tunnel and similar problems are very common during pregnancy, especially in the later stages of pregnancy. Your blood volume has increased, you have increased swelling and fluid retention, and these can increase pressure on the ligaments through which nerves run, causing the symtpoms you describe. The median nerve is the nerve at issue with carpal tunnel syndrome, which is typically experienced as pain/numbness/tingling at the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and/or half of the ring finger. It is actually another nerve that is at issue with numbness, etc. experienced on the outside of the hand: the ulnar nerve. Most people (other than specialists) talk very generically about "carpal tunnel" during pregnancy, but from the symtpoms described it seems like some people experience carpal tunnel, while others experience problems with ulnar nerve compression.

Typically, the symptoms disappear after pregnancy. Sometimes they go away pretty quickly, other times it may take weeks or even months. (There are cases in which it doesn't go away and treatment is needed, but in the more typical scenario, the symtpoms do disappear.) I experienced ulnar nerve compression during a good portion of my pregnancy and was surprised and disheartened when the pain and numbness continued after my children were born; it took several weeks, I would say, for it to resolve (it was something I noticed only later, when one day I realized that I had no more numbness or pain).

That being said, I would tell your doctor about any pain or numbness you are experiencing, especially if you are experiencing any other symptoms (such as increased swelling). It is always possible that something else is the cause.

Assuming it is "just" nerve compression, your best bet is to purchase a wrist/hand support that's made for people experiencing carpal tunnel syndrome. I had to sleep with two on -- they have metal supports in them and are not comfortable, but they did help. Most pregnant women experiencing nerve issues find some degree of relief with such supports. Generally, more aggressive treatment of the symptoms is not warranted, due to the fact that the symptoms will usually resolve themselves, as already stated.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

I had this symptom for 2 of 5 pregnancies . . .
Went to a chiropractor for some back straightening sessions - it had little positive effect (in late pregnancy) - and finishing up the crocheting projects for the new one was a bit frustrating . . .
The 'problem' went away, entirely, a few weeks after delivery.
Until it did, it seemed like 'forever' . . .
Be patient - it should pass, soon after delivery, if you have the same cause that I did.

Yes, unfortunately. I had it last time and will probably have it again. It's called pregnancy-induced carpal tunnel, and it does go away after the baby is born, but not immediately after the baby is born. For me it started with pins and needles feeling in my hand, then went numb and my hands became hard to use. I couldn't open jars or do other things very well. It was pretty annoying (just one more annoying side-effect of late pregnancy). I think it took a few months after she was born before I had all the feeling back in my hands.

I Had a numb leg for the last couple of weeks of my pregnancy. Was all due to my daughter pressing on a nerve.

Yes and it gets worse. Most of it went away after the baby but still get it sometime when I sleep. I think it's normal. I never asked the doctor but I asked other woman and they said it was normal. Good luck and congrats on the little one. They are so much fun!

The same thing happened to my daughter. She had her baby 2 months and it has gotten much better. It's always good to check with your doctor about any problems during pregnancy, though. Good luck!
