I am currently working at an environmental company & have been with this company for 2 yrs. I do not presently have a degree. I was very lucky to snag this job!! I do however want to go back to school very badly!! I must make the decsion if I want to get a degree in environmental science or a related field ...b/c Im not sure how long I would want to or could stay at my present job....or if I should get a degree that is general & I could apply to many different jobs once completed. Im looking into a online degree program as it seems the most conveinent & I could keep my present full time job. Is there anyone out there that has some solid advice to give me?? Thank you very much!!

Go ahead and start taking some classes. As you are not sure what you should major in, take the prerequisite classes that you know that you will need no matter what your major will be. That way you will have the basic classes out of the way when you decide. You will need English, Math, Social Science, Lab Science. Talk to a counselor with whichever college you decide to use. Make sure that all classes are transferable, so that if you decide to transfer to a regular college or university, they will all count toward your degree. Good luck to you.

The answer all depends on YOU. Nobody can tell you what to do because deciding what to study is strictly a personal choice. The main question I would ask myself is whether or not you like that field and think you'll want to continue working in it.

If so, then pursuing an environmental science or related degree would work. But if you're thinking of changing fields, then the question is changing to what. However, there are some general classes that can apply to virtually every field, such as marketing or accounting.

Be very careful in choosing online programs. Most of them are not properly accredited. It would be a shame to waste your time and money. There are many reputable "bricks and mortar" colleges and universities that offer at least some classes online.

Another option is going to school and night +/or on weekends. Most schools now offer night classes and I know of several that offer classes on Saturdays. I finished my bachelors degree this way, back in the latter half of the 80s when evening programs were harder to find. I took two classes each semester and two classes each summer. It took years, but my employer paid my tuition, which meant that I graduated with no student loans.

Do start with the general requirements. As you start taking classes, talk to the people who work in the different departments at your firm and find out what they do. You may find that one of them has a job that sounds really interesting. A business degree might be a good way to go, as you'll learn things that will be helpful in many different jobs, especially as you start supervising people and dealing with budgets. However, you may decide to go in a different direction. Good Luck!
