I asked my dad this once. He said it referred to the 30's-40's movie star Errol Flynn. Apparently, he had a reputation for being quite the "player" in his day, even after he got put on trial for statutory rape. He beat the rap. So, apparently it originally meant to be successful with women. Later, it came to mean success in anything. Dad's long gone now, but I believe this was his explanation, and he would have been of the right age back then to know.

In the 1940's there was a very popular actor names Errol Flynn. He was quite handsome and rumored to be bi-sexual. It seems he had an affair with an underage girl. So that's where the saying came from 'In like Flynn' get it?

The common view is that it refers to Errol Flynn, the actor. He was accused of molesting a girl, but was let off. The suspicion is that it is because he was famous.
