Ok Rts games are some of the best and most fun games to play. Here's some fo my favourites in no particular order:
1. C&C Red Alert 2 - Although slightly dated, this game is still incredibly fun, and you could also pick it up pretty cheap from a bargain bin. Graphics leave alot to be desired though.
2. Starcraft (Broodwar) - In my opinion the best RTS game of all time, the game has perfectly balanced 3 completely unique races that you get to play as, Terran, Zerg and Protoss. All 3 are very different to play with which is why I like this game so much, it is very enjoyable to play, and the expansion (Broodwar) I found to be challenging. The game is in fact so popular that it still has a huge online fan base, and Battle.net run regular tournaments.
3. C&C Generals - Sort of an updated version of Red Alert 2, very up to date, fun to play, I used to LAN up with my buddies and we'd do 8 player games, very fun and the most recent in terms of graphics etc. Single player is fun.
4. Warcraft 3 - Probably worth noting, very popular game online, although I never really got into it. 3d graphics, and 4 different tribes to play as.
Just as a note Bungie are bringing out an RTS game based on the FPS Halo, it will be called Halo wars, and should come out in the near future, I would keep an eye out for that when its released.
Hope this helps!

The Dawn of War series are good - the expantions are certainly worth getting as the main game, although fun, is too easy to finish.
The Total War games are fantastic but not really typical of the RTS format.
Red Alert 2 is a classic and costs about £5 these days - it is a lot of fun over a LAN.
Warcraft 3 is prossibly the best RTS game as it has so many different factions you can play as.

Star Wars Empire at War.
It is a fantastic rendition of the star wars universe. You can play as either Rebels or the Empire taking over the galaxy. Campaign mode is amazing, Darth Vader can take entire planets in the beginning of the Game. Still the game is challenging and provides hours of entertainment.
Unfortunately I had to build a new computer so I could play it.
I still say it was worth it though.
5 stars - *****

The best has to be starcraft. Also try Age of Empires and Total Annihilation. God of war is also quite good.
