You can select a 250GB SATA (Serial ATA) hard drive with16MB buffer from any of the well-known brands like Seagate, Samsung or Western Digital.

The hard disk technology has advanced so much that the quality of all the leading manufacturers is almost the same. The chances of disk failure are minimal and the warranty period is three years for most of them..

If you want to play safe, buy two smaller hard disks, one internal with 180GB capacity and another external with 80GB capacity to back up your data.

No matter what brand of hard disk you buy, you have to maintain it regularly. Otherwize, your computer will slow down after a few weeks.

It is a good idea to partition the internal hard drive and limit the capacity of the C drive to about 40GB to speed up disk optimization. It should be done regurlarly by following procedure.

Click on C drive > Properties > Tools> Optimize

Please note that my answer is based on the assumption that you are using Windows XP SP2

Buy a hard with maximum capacity. A 80GB hard disk would do for most people. Getting an external drive as a backup (if you can afford it) would be a good idea since you are paranoid about disk failure.

It depends what you want to do...you can buy a couple drives and use one as a backup (which would be nice). You could also use an external drive as backup, that way if you get a surge and it messes up your internal drive(s), you can still use the external drive. I like Seagate, I have never had a problem with any of their drives and I know they have good support.
