Do you take it seriously? what I mean is, do you feel that your opinion is invalidated by some prick that would rather laff at you than just let you help?

Well, I only give thumbs down for the really inappropriate answers. (like the ones who make a joke of a serious question or put a sexual slant on a question unrelated, something that actually offends me)

So, I do not appreciate it when I answer a question seriously and honestly and get a thumbs-down.

But then I once hit the thumbs down accidentally when I meant to hit the thumbs up and felt sorry about it.

I would ignore the thumbs down. It could have been done by one of those immature people who answers inappropriately. Or it could be that your answer lacks something and the person felt you were not qualified to answer or that your answer was going to mislead someone. If the answer is a matter of opinion, then it is kind of mean to do a thumbs-down just because you don't agree. But if it's supposed to be a factual answer, then it is appropriate because you don't want to see someone getting a wrong answer.

Depends on the question. I think in a more serious or simple question they can tend to be useless, so a thumbs down on a pointless answer is kind of irritating. On the flip side, in a more debate oriented situation, sometimes a thumbs down can be funny! It shows that people who disagree with you have read what you wrote and found it distasteful. In some cases it can be fun to intentionally draw as many thumbs down as possible!

If someone gives a thumbs down I would take it the same way as you've mentioned but that works because those who take it to heart often succeed because they give their 200% the next time as they are terrified of facing a thumbs down again.

I don't take it seriously. It just someones way of saying they don't agree with you and won't say why. Usually I don't stay on a question long enough to see them give me a thumbs up or down. Don't worry about it.

I've gotten numerous thumbs down on a answer that got picked as Best Answer, so for the most part I don't put much stock in it.

well try to look at yourself from another person's viewpoint...

not that you have to live by another person's standards but since you are living in a very social world you have to deal with these people nonetheless

Not everyone is of the same opinion, that's life, and that's the way it is.

No, I don't take it personally. Every one is entitled to their own opinions. Even if they are wrong. :)
