Choose something handmade and lightweight. One of the best ways to investigate this is to go to the tourist areas and see what is available there. What crafts are made in your area of India? Small fabric items, like scarves or madras? Brass items may be too heavy if you have to bring a lot of them. What about something made from leather? Don't bring anything like seeds, plants, or spices which are not in government inspected packaging.
When I went to Japan from the US, I made over 200 beautiful bookmarks to give as gifts to our hosts and guests at the seminars. Each featured 4-5 new commemorative postal stamps attached to cardstock, laminated, and a small tassel. I wrapped each one in a band of colored tissue before presenting it. Our hosts were thrilled to see the beauty and variety of US postal stamps, and since it was a useful gift, it was doubly appreciated.

Visit the state arts and crafts sales emporium in your city. If you are in Bangalore you have good shops. Sandlawood carved artefacts, incense and other small gifts are available to you. Carry good Indian classical music CD's and you can think of books about Indian culture all of which make your friends in Japan happy. Good Luck and have a good time in Japan.
