To me all the self-described EMO's are what generations before called "slackers". The attempt to make it fashionable has escaped me. Am I missing something?

I think so. Just because you're an emotional person and listen to the music doesnt make you a slacker or underacheiver.
In fact im studying Philosophy, Sociology and History and constantly get high marks in all of my classes and am predicted A's.
So there!!

Well, some are and some aren't. You can't really make sweeping generalizations. Anyway, I'm not sure if 'high achiever' is what you mean. Maybe it's just that slackers didn't seem to care about anything, but emo kids seem to care (cry?) about everything.
