To be quite honest no. One of my closest friends fathers is a Big wig here at the Massachusetts Compaq/HP Plant who shall remain nameless. And All of the computers within his OWN house are dells. The Compaq/HP's are very poorly Built and mostly require Parts Exclusively from HP/Compaq which to you as a consumer means if it breaks out of warranty your repairs will cost 3X what they should.

Compaq has been taken over by HP. Most of the computers that you can buy in stores like Best Buy & Circuit City are all pretty much the same with the E-machines at the bottom of the list. Depending on the equipment your Compaq come with, it may be a decent computer. HP, Compaq, Acer, IBM are all pretty much the same when it comes to quality. Make sure that you have adequate memory (at least 512 MB), a good processor (Pentium 4 or higher, I would try to stay away from Intel Celeron Processors if you can. AMD processors are pretty good, better than Celeron anyway), decent video card (128 MB at least, maybe 64). Other than these few things, you should be okay with a Compaq. If you are just going to surf the web and maybe use MS Office, you should be fine with most computers that are out there. Just stay away from the really inexpensive PC's & notebooks. There is a reason the prices are so low...

Computer manufacturers are getting a lot better these days. They all use the same parts, i.e. Hard drives, mainboard, video, sound and everything else. Purchasing computers are like purchasing cars - everyone has their favorites and wouldn't be caught dead driving the "other" ones. Personally, as long as the service, should you ever require it, meets your needs and the computer does what you want it to do with out locking up, then any computer is good no matter who makes it. RAM is very important in preventing a lot of performance problems and the 1GB recommendation from an earlier answer should be the minimum. Hope this helps... By the way, I own HP/Compaq laptops (3 of them) and wouldn't be caught dead with any others...LOL. I have never had any issues with them so I like them. That is why I keep going back.

I have never had one, but almost bought one last month. Friends told me that they are junk. So I changed my mind. I think you would be much better off spending a little more and getting an HP or Dell or something else. Basically compaqs are cheap because they aren't good computers. If you are going to buy one get one that is at least going to perform adequately. Roughly $500.00 isn't worth buying something that is going to take up room in your house as junk that dosen't work well. Spend a couple hundred more and get a good computer that will perform.
Also, I never had a MAC, but I am told that they are the best. All of my friends that have had them never want to go back to a PC.
Hope this helped you. :-)

Well i have one from 1998 model and it runs gr8. it is a lil slow cause then the processor wasnt that great...i have since added more memory to the slots and see it runs faster. i am running xp professional on it and it works gr8. i have a3 pc's 1 conpaq desktop, compaq laptop and a hp. to me hp is far more better but it is a lil higher than compaq even though hp took over compaq a few years ago. so i think if you do get one make sure it at least has an AMD Processor so he can do several things at once with out it locking up on him. good luck! and happy holidays

No no no no no no no... They are TERRIBLE! I mean, I hate PCs but Compaqs are the WORST. My mother has had two of them, and her current Compaq is junk. It constantly turns off and on, without notice, when it's in sleep mode. It's the noisiest computer I've ever heard. The graphics chip is terrible, I couldn't even play Half Life for five minutes before it would crash. It's just a terrible machine. There are much better PCs to be had. But, if you want my honest opinion, get a Macintosh. I have two Macs and I love them to death. If you want to make your husband happy, get him a Mac. He'll enjoy using Mac OS X. If there's anything that he needs that requires Windows, that's okay, because Macs can now dual boot with Windows XP, meaning he'll never have to worry about compatibility. If you want any further information about Mac, send me a message.

They are ok. I never really liked Compaq (or HP for that matter). I recommend Dell, but it's totally up to you.

Turn your computer on and hold down the F8 button. When the list appears choose "Last Known Good Configuration"
