I just went to the cafeteria at work to get a bage. While I was walking back to the office, the bagel fell off of the plate and on the floor. The floor is carpeted.

The cafeteria closed as I was leaving. So, I can not go buy another bagel. The bagel was $1.00

I did not add the topping in the cafeteria. I got the packs to take back to the office and do it there.

If there was no cream cheese or jelly, etc, on it-5 second rule definitely applies! By the way, your job must really be tough if you have time to get our opinions on this. LOL!!

I would eat it.
If you get sick from eating a bagel that has been dropped on the floor, these are the reasons (in order of likelihood)
1. The people in the kitchen (or in the factory) are sick and touch, sneeze, cough on it.
2. You touched it with the same hands that touched the money to pay for it. Yuck, money is filthy.
3. The cream cheese is rancid and/or has bacteria in it.
Maybe way down the list would come the chance of a disease/poisoning come off the floor.
And yeah, I have an 18 month old, so I'm probably biased because she is constantly "finding" things to eat. Other than one cold (which she caught from her babysitter) she has never been sick and eating dirt and everything else for months.
The 10 second rule, I am being forced to live by it. And so far, no casulties...lol

If you are that hungry then go for it. However only providing there is no dust or hairs or anything like that stuck to it. I think you will be safe.
However if we don't heard from you again...then we will all know that it was not wise to eat a bage that has fallen onto a floor despite it being carpeted!

While it isn't want people to hear, I'd eat it. There are probably far worse things in this world that will make you sick than a bagel falling on the floor for 2 seconds.

First of all the 5-second rule is pure myth. Once anything hits the floor, it is instantly contaminated by bacteria, etc. You have 3 choices: 1. Toss it. 2. Dust it off and cut off the part that hit the floor and eat the rest. 3. Live dangerously. Dust it off and eat all of it. Your choice. A BS in Nursing student.

Did it fall buttered/cream cheesed side down? If yes, i wouldn't, all the carpet fibres would be stuck to it, and it just wouldn't taste good. If it fell on the bottom side, sure, not much sticks to the other side. Mind you I'm a starved university student, I'll eat almost anything right about now.

Yes, give it a quick wipe and eat it.
As long as your food doesn't fall onto a wet/moist floor/area or in a place where there are normally alot of germs (bathroom or kitchen floor) it is likely very very safe to eat.
Bon appetit
