Actually contrary to what someone said, sharks CAN stop swimming. Sharks are often observed resting on the ocean floor, not moving, and NOT dead or dying. Water and Oxygen still flows their gills.
And no, sharks can not swim backwards. Unlike fish, sharks cannot stop suddenly or swim backwards. A shark's pectoral fins cannot bend upwards like a fish, limiting its swimming ability to forward motion. If a shark needs to move backwards, it uses gravity to fall, not swim backwards. Sharks must swerve to the side in order not to hit something - they cannot simply stop.
Someone said their red tailed shark can swim backwards - these 'sharks' are actually fish, just called sharks because they have a similar bodyshape.

Sharks won't be able to swim backwards because a million) they ought to have water consistently transferring over their gills to be in a position to take up the oxygen 2) they do no longer have a swim bladder, so in the journey that they end swimming ahead they'll actually sink and three) As earlier suggested, their pectoral fins can in common words bypass up and down, no longer area to area, so that they don't have any way of creating themselves bypass backwards even with the undeniable fact that, black finned sharks aren't from now on quite sharks, they're from the kinfolk because the catfish, so that they do have swimbladders and performance the means to bypass backwards.

I know that some fish can swim backwards b/c the fish in my aquarium do all the time!
Sharks, however, must constantly swim forward in order to push water through their gils so that they can breathe. If a shark were to stop swimming, or swim backwards, it would no longer be able to breathe.
So, no, sharks don't swim backward.

I don't think sharks can swim backwards. The big ones any way. That is what they said on "Deep Blue Sea". Only the genetically engineered sharks could swim backwards.

no, they can't. Sharks can't do a lot of things, like stop swimming ever. If they do, they will sink and die. Even when they sleep. But yea, no, they can't swim backwards.
