Riders on the Storm" is a popular 1971 song by The Doors from the L.A. Woman album. Reaching number 14 on the charts, it still receives considerable radio air play, especially when the weather forecast calls for rain or a storm. The song was inspired by the song "Ghostriders in the Sky." It incorporates thunder and rain sound effects and Ray Manzarek's Fender Rhodes electric piano playing which emulated the sound of rain. Riders on the Storm is also the title of an autobiographical book written by Doors member John Densmore, and the name of Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger's Doors tribute band (formerly called D21C and Doors of the 21st Century before Densmore's lawsuit forced them to drop the famous name). "Riders on the Storm" is loosely based on the notorious spree killer Billy Cook who posed as a hitchhiker and murdered an entire family. The song was recorded at the Doors Workshop in December 1970 with the assistance of Bruce Botnick, their longtime engineer who was coproducing the recording sessions. Jim Morrison recorded his main vocals and then whispered the lyrics over it to create the haunting effect.

Riders On The Storm Lyrics

They were inspired to write that song by "Ghostriders In The Sky". As with other drug-induced writing sessions, it doesn't mean anything to people that aren't stoned, but it sort of rhymes.

If you read the lyrics, you see it change from nonsense to protecting your family from a sociopathic hitchhiker. Then it changes to telling a woman that she needs to love her man. Well, what about her family? And why should she run when she has a car? And who would be the riders on the storm?

I wish that Jim Morrison hadn't died so he could have just sunk into obscurity instead of becoming a "legend". FYI - The Doors were not popular until after Morrison died. After that, their career took off and Robbie Krieger still makes a decent buck without writing any new material or putting on concerts.

I think you have to be a fan to understand. I have read 'No One Here Gets Out Alive' twice. Some of the songs are explained in that.

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house were born
Into this world were thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out on loan
Riders on the storm

Theres a killer on the road
His brain is squirmin like a toad
Take a long holiday
Let your children play
If ya give this man a ride
Sweet memory will die
Killer on the road, yeah

Girl ya gotta love your man
Girl ya gotta love your man
Take him by the hand
Make him understand
The world on you depends
Our life will never end
Gotta love your man, yeah

Wow!

Riders on the storm

Into this house were born
Into this world were thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out alone

"Riders on the Storm" was one of the Doors' songs written by Jim Morrison, its charismatic but troubled lead singer. (As opposed to hits from guitarist Robby Krieger, including first hit, "Light My Fire.") Essentially, it is about alienation and not having a home base.

Death was a theme throughtout his writings, both song lyrics and poetry, including the wandering, faceless killer. ("Killer on the road.") (Check out "The End," "Not to Touch the Earth" and the suite it was part of, "Celebration of the Lizard") He used to play mind games with his friends and acquaintances, and I remember reading -- I think it was keyboardist Ray Manzarek -- someone saying he came in once and announced he had killed someone in the desert. No one believed him, and there is no evidence in his own writings or in recollections about him that he ever had that sort of rage. He was more a danger to himself.

Regarding the style, it was when the Doors started going back to blues roots, and Morrison could throw out a lot of "scat" type lyrics that sounded weird, wicked and existential, but didn't connect.

God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform
He plants his footsteps in the sea
and rides upon the storm.
