DSL service is not available in my area, but I would like to use a webcam to communicate with relatives that live far away. I know it would probably be crawling along with regular dial-up Internet, but how would it perform with accelerated dialup? Or should I not bother and wait until DSL is available (whenever that is!)?

There is no such thing as "accelerated dialup." It's a marketing ploy...all that happens is your surfing goes faster because the program saves the pages you visit so you don't have to download them again...it doesn't actually speed up your connection speed. You can use a webcam, just set the preferences so that you use the least amount of bandwidth. The quality will probably be bad, though.

accelerated dialup is not faster dialup, its merely cached sites, so the pages load faster as the static information for the pages is stored, your webcam will perform at whatever speed you have, whether thats 52kbps 32kbps or 3.5 mbps, faster connection would give you smoother video and better picture quality.

u can use your webcan even with normal dial-up, but the picture will 'stutter'(or whatever it is called), cause i had dial up(52kb\s) before and i could use my webcam then. so you won't have any problem then! u can always change the settings to better quality OR faster speed , open yahoo messenger--click on the messenger bar at the top--then preferences--then the webcam part options and choose it there.
hope this helps,,,, Bye bye

you can use it - but you may not like the performance.

I would just go with voice (which should work) however the 'acceleration' is compression - and this would add additional delay to your voice...

Give it a try - it is free (unless you were going to buy a webcam...)

If you try it with no luck try to tweak the webcam settings to send lower resolution, less frames per second (try 1!),...
good luck

perhaps that is best, even though with a cable, it still not like looking at the tv, without a interruptions every now and then.
