Obviously, the higher the thread count, the better quality, softness, etc. but as was stated the most expensive.
I won't go below 250 and prefer at least 400 thread count.
The next time you're shopping, take a look (& feel) of Egyptian cotton. It has a much higher thread count, will surely last much longer, yes it is more expensive but will be so much more comfortable for you.
Hope this helps.

I prefer a higher thread count because its softer and less chafing than lower thread counts. Lowest thread count to buy.... id say is 200. Unfortunately a higher thread count is more expensive.

200 is the lowest and can be ok. 300-400 is pretty comfortable. Anything above that, I can't tell a difference. Also beware that the higher the thread count, the easier they will tear or wear out quicker.

starting at 350 thread count and up is best.I would not recommend a 200 thread count, they are thin and you won,t like them,I usaiiy buy 350-400 they are softer and lot better sheets. The higher the count the better the sheet

my lowest is 280 but the higher it goes the better, for my wedding I got a 3000 and its great. high thread count doesn't have to be expensive there are some places where you can get 6 or 7 hundred for a fair price, just shop around. try overstock.com they have OK prices.

I like JCPenney's, it's a David something line; Kohl's, also Homegoods or Ann&Hope Bath outlet (I'm in CT) are good places too. I have used different sheets from different stores and the quality and counts seem to be the same. No problems with any sheets from any of the stores...

I refuse to buy anything less than 400 count, and that's slumming it for me.
