I think it was the agency D'arcy Masius Benton & Bowles who came up with that slogan in 1965.
Incidentally because of falling sales Mars is having a new slogan.
"Pleasure you can't measure."

The slogan "A Mars a day helps you work, rest and play" was coined by the one & only King of Quotes - Murray Walker, the motor racing commentator, when he worked as an advertising copywriter in 1959.

All these decades, and nobody seems to have challenged the fundamental lunacy of the slogan: how on earth could a candy bar help you Rest? Granted the sugar and fat may supply energy for Work and Play... but one would have to picture some sort of nougat-induced stupor (a diabetic coma?) (can't-get-out-of-bed extreme obesity?) to connect the Mars bar with Rest.

Ha, Haaa....! I never thought of it that way.. Now you've given me an idea - What if I put four little wheels on it, then put a little head on one end, and a little tail on the other end- I could pretend it's one of those little pull along puppies that I used to have when I was a nipper.!

It wasn't Murray Walker. Though in a programme about him he said he was part of the team involved. Sorry | can't remember the name he mentioned.
