First of all babydoll is a narcissist, human life is NOT more precious than an animals life because humans ARE animals(Kingdom animalia). Now I would like to say that I agree completely with Amy F, hypocrisy runs rampant in human society. BUT... and this is a big "but" heres how I look at the whole thing. It is never ethical or morally right to take the life of another living being against thier will or without thier consent, as in the case of dogs and cats you cannot ask if they are suffering and you cannot know for sure they are ready to die. However there are times when you have such a bond with dogs or cats that you know something is wrong and it is necessary for the happiness, safety and well being of all involved that thier life be ended.. it isnt right but it is justifiable. If you have never seen a dog so abused so damaged physically and/or psychologically that they will never be healed then you will not understand euthanasia. People in this world like babydoll who think that some life is not as precious as others are the ones who irreparably damage dogs and cats and leave them in the hands of people who break thier own hearts every day killing those who cannot be saved. How can you find a home for a dog who attacks every human they see? or a cat that has lost its legs and fur from being burned alive by some cruel human? how can you heal a dog who saw his best friend die and lost his mind because of it? sometimes healing of tortured souls is beyond our power and even though we would rather go back in time and stop them from ever being abused or damaged we cant and the only thing to do is release them from thier torment and send them to a better place without pain and suffering. In those cases euthanasia is acceptable, but it is not acceptable to kill healthy, happy cats and dogs because irresponsible humans abandon them, but because of the prevalent attitude that we are higher and better animals than them people do not treat them as they should and they are left thrown away with no home, no family and no place to go where there is enough money or space to keep them thier whole life. So people who dont want to see thier future suffering are left to clean up the mess of uncaring humans who think a pet is just an animal that doesnt merit any lifelong commitment on thier part. They dont realize that all life is sacred and precious and that we all have a responsibility to respect that life. Euthanasia is wrong but it is necessary because many humans are careless, cruel and selfish and not every cat/dog is lucky enough to find the ones that are truly loving and will without fail care for them all thier life. The saddest part is that there are not enough good people to give all the cats and dogs in this world a home, and the ones that love them the most are forced to take thier life because there are not enough loving people to take them into thier hearts and home.

Why is it ethical to euthanize a dog on the assumption that it may be suffering--when it is impossible to ask the dog if it is, indeed, suffering or whether it would prefer to live or die--but not to euthanize a human who requests it?
Edit: I understand that we can make decisions on behalf of our pets--but then why CAN'T we make them on our own behalf? Isn't that just a little hypocritical?

Because, Amy, human life is more precious than that of animals. Humans can make decisions about their beloved pets when they can discern that they are truly suffering more than necessary.
