The same reason appearance is important in life. As wrong as it is, people judge other people on appearance.

Many companies have a dress code that requires adherence. At a minimum, failure to comply with proper work attire can be a distraction in the workplace. Employees are professionals, and that includes how they maintain their appearance in the work environment. Appearance reflects upon the basic character and work ethic of an individual. Isn’t it conceivable that someone who does not take the time to present a decent appearance or wantonly flaunts indecency would have the same attitude carry over into their work activities?
The employer should ensure that all employees have access to the dress code information and that they understand it.
I knew a man who graduated from college. His buddies knew how smart he was, but prospective employers could not see past the long hair and untidy appearance. Could they have possibly been thinking about how this person would work out in a professional office environment? Probably.
The same is true for currently employed professionals. A professional environment should have some level of professional appearance. Structure begets structure. Professional appearance and decency tend to beget a professional work ethic. Not only is appearance important, but so is professional demeanor.

Think of this. When you go to a store, and you are inside, you take a look around, if you see people there that work there and they haven't brushed their hair and their clothes are wrinkled and their shirt is not tucked in, it might give you the sense that they don't care about the next person that walks into their store. Now you as a customer, walks into the store and you notice not only the appearance of the people working there, but the overall appearance of the store itself. Whether or not you notice, the moment you walk into the store, you are making a subconscious decision whether or not the store appeals to you, not only sight but also what you smell and what you hear, which in turn may affect whether you buy something from the store or not.

A society, in order to be a society, must have norms. In business, your contact with others tends to be limited and brief. An ability to comply with societal norms suggests at least the possibility of general competence. Individualism, when taken too far, and especially sloppiness, in appearance can suggest that the same will be found in one's work as well, and in many circumstances, this is undesirable. If you're an artist, a certain level of eccentricity may work in your favor. But much of the business world is about tasks in which normalcy and tight tolerances in work are desirable qualities.

If you really want to make a good first impression, you will treat a job interview as important as if you were going on a blind date. Most employers have only a limited time to view applicants, and a lot of applications to go through. Make the most of this short time by presenting yourself in the best light possible.

Nobody wants to you to represent them looking like something out of a bad movie, because that's bad for the company and that looks bad on you. So take pride in yourself and the company that you work for.

Appearance is important on jobs because when you're interviewing for a job, and you look crappy, then the person who's interviewing you is gonna think that the work you do is crappy. It's how they judge you.

because others from other companies or just costumers will most likely judge u for the way u look, unfortunatly this is how we humans are, and so well i highly recommend that people dress neatly for their jobs if they would like to have a "good reputation"

no one wants to higher someone that looks dirty or like a slob it's unprofessional. if you take time to take care of yourself than you take pride in yourself and will most likely take pride in your work. also when you meet with clients or other companys you have to be presentable and professional. would you trust someone that was dirty and had holes in their clothes with your mortgage? what if a doctor walked in like that?
