Stephen Kings' "Dark Tower" series, it's not scary like his usual stuff. I think it's his best works. Read anything by Nora Roberts, John Grisham, James Patterson, Ethan Black, and Sandra Brown.

My favorite authors recently have been David Baldacci, Matthew Reilly, Gayle Lynds, James Rollins, et al.
The Baldacci books are brilliantly written, the way the pace changes is alluring at least.
Reading Reilly is like watching a modern action blockbuster, the pace is brutal, the plot works with the characters and above all they are supremely readable. I especially liked the books with Shane Schofield as the lead.
Gayle Lynds, I'd call him a good successor for Ludlum.
If you're into some mystery with your bowlful of action try Rollins' Map of Bones. It starts off brilliantly, the plot works well but I can't give any more spoilers because I'm only halfway through reading it.

Anne Perry has a lot of books. She's a good writer. Also Mary Higgins Clark. They both write mystery books.
Also, if you like fantasy you could try David Eddings - The Belgariad series - I really like that and it's followed by The Mallorean series.

I read "The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon and it was one of my favorites from last year. It's is a mystery and has a great story. I think Antonio Banderas needs to make a movie from this book.

If you like fantasy or adventure. I would definitely recommend Poison Study and Magic Study by Maria V. Snyder. She's a new writer, but the books are fabulous!

Hi, Ames, You'd enjoy the mysteries by Donna Leon. She is American, but lives in Italy, and all of her mysteries are set in Italy. Wonderfully written, and I love the fact that she always describes the meals the detective is eating -- delicious Italian fare. Happy reading, and buon gusto!
