This is a question for only those into hip-hop really I guess.
For anyone who is about to say 'rap isn't music! its just a load of black dudes shouting!' or whatever please do me a favour, leave me alone and go answer a different question.
But for those into hip-hop, why is Jay-Z so highly praised?? To me he is an ugly dude with big nostrils and an irritatingly whiny nasal voice with very little talent and hardly any good songs that I can name. Yet most people consider him like 'the king' or certainly one of the greatest of all time.
WHY??? There are SOOO many better MCs... especially in the underground scene.. why?

I thought I was the only one wondering about this. I don't get it either. He's ok but, to me, his rap skills aren't all that phenomenal or spectacular. Nothing really stands out about him lyrically speaking so I have no idea why he's considered the "king".There are plenty of other people that should get that title.

I've heard one or two nice freestyles by Jay-Z, but I'm with you I wouldn't even put him in the top 20 hip hop artists. I guess he is so highly thought of because of drive and personality, maybe lyric-writing, getting to be a CEO he must have some talents. The publicity machine (including Beyonce now) tells us that he is/ was the greatest rapper out there, my ears are disagreeing though.

Who considers him the king? He is rubbish. That video with him and bouncy is enough to make you vomit.
What is with the nostrils anyway. Underground hip-hop always so much better. .

His "music" is rubbish and he looks like a monkey. I don't know what a stunning girl like Beyonce sees in him (either it's his cash or he has an enormous wang!). They're like Beauty & The Beast together.
Ja Rule, there's another one. How did that guy get a record contract??? He has a voice like a belch!

I never have liked Jay-Z. I have wondered how so many can like some one who has no talent, but then again, look at the dixie chicks.I just don't understand it.
