I recentely completed a course at BICSI for Installer 1. Passed the exam and now I am looking to gain the experience with the interest of eventually being able to design the backbone infrastructure being placed in buildings.

Designing infrastructures and installing are not the same thing. Designer doesn't even need to have installation experience. You need to get a degree in structural engineering.

If you are looking to lay cable, as you were trained, there are a ton of jobs out there. Call any of the communication companies and ask for HR.
