my employer deposits it on wednesday by 7a.m. and it often doesn't appear in my account until after noon on thursday!

Call up the bank and ask them. Often its a delay within the bank that will magically clear up once you call them on it.

And I'm guessing your actual payday (the day you'd get a check if you weren't on direct deposit) is Thursday... right?
Yeah, that's pretty normal, kinda like waiting for the check to clear. Your pay doesn't appear in your account till your employer's deposit clears.
Yes, you could call the bank about it, but I doubt it would do much good... It can't hurt to try though- the worst that will happen is that you'll get a "I'm sorry, but that's procedure"...

if you bank with bank of america, they are horrible about this.
