In old nautical superstition, it was considered extremely bad luck to give your ship a male name. Even so, the ship was considered a home, a mother, if you will, so it was always referred to as a her.

There WAS one ship of which I'm aware that was given a male name and was always spoken of as "he" (by Adolf Hitler)... The German battleship "Bismarck" which sunk the HMS Hood. The ship was later disabled by a torpedo from a Swordfish biplane, which struck the rudder, jamming it and rendering the ship helpless until it was shelled and torpedoed by the British ships HMS Rodney, King George V, Norfolk and Dorsetshire and finally scuttled by the crew May 27, 1941 off the coast of Brest, France.

Cars and boats, most people working on them tend to be men. They have such a love for their hobby or their trade that it's, in its own neat little way, like being in love with a woman. Mother Nature is given the Maternal parent name because Father Time took the paternal one.

Yes, names depend on the culture. BTW as any sailor knows, Ships do not go underwater. Only Boats (submarines) do that.

Most of the time NO, However I know of such a case that being the captain of the battleship BISMARCK refused to tolerate anyone refering to his ship as she.
