Everyone says that teachers don't make that much money and I do agree that they don't make a lot but I think that they make the kind of money that someone can live on. if you think of it Police Officers and so many other professions make the same amount of money or lower than a teacher but, everybody picks on the teaching profession.

So why is that? I have to constantly defend my wage. I started out at a poverty level wage, and it has slowly increased each year. I never complain about what I make, but people always make comments that I make too much. I take work home with me on most nights and weekends. I take home the problems of my students (you might be surprised at the baggage these kids carry in their lives these days). It is true that I get the summer off, but I do not get paid for it.
I agree with you, I really think we get a decent wage (would not have said that 10 years ago).
And I think that police officers and nurses will never get paid what they are really worth!!

The salary/remuneration for a particular job is the market value for a particular profession and designation at the city/town where the office is located. Job postings at websites like Monster, Yahoo HotJobs and Careerbuilder carry information about salaries. The Govt Dept of Labor, (www.bls.gov) Bureau of statistics has information about median salaries for different professions and details of additional compensation offered. Other online resources are salary.com and payscale. Your salary will also depend on your educational qualification and how you handle your career. The first year I taught, my salary was $4500 a year. The next year I made $7995. In the early 70's, I made a whopping $12,500 for teaching in a facility for juvenile offenders. In the 1950's, my daddy was head of the English department in a large high school. His take home pay once a month was $472.

Government jobs tend to have lower salaries, but better benefits. Plus, at retirement, they get pensions and health care. Most companies are getting rid of there pensions.

So in the long run, I think it all equals out.
