Those around you who take care of you (and you them)and love you no matter what! I have many friends I would consider family along with my mother, stepfather(he and I are exactly alike!) and two cats.
We get the word familiar from the same root word as family, by the way. That leaves tons of room for interpretation.

none of this "whoever wants to call themselves a family, 2 mommies, 2 daddies, mom and dog, dad and sheep" baloney.

A group of people (blood relatives or not, opposite sex or not) that you can always rely on and who will love you for who you are and nuture and care for you.
