The anchor is a traditional Christian symbol for hope.
The allegorical figure of Hope always holds an anchor, as Charity holds a heart, and Faith a cross.
At least in Germany a traditional pattern for sailor's tattoos is a cross and an anchor behind a flaming heart.
So the anchor and hope go together, and to me it seems a better name for a pub than either one on it's own.

Hi Gordon >
My understanding of the pub name is that if you anchor in any dodgy place, then hope the thing has latched onto something solid.
It is indeed a nautical thing.
As is the "Sailor and Compass"
Dang! we are going in the wrong direction !
Bung the anchor overboard, and hope it holds.
Bob.

Perhaps the building of most note is The Young Vanish pub which is said to be have been named after a racehorse by a landlord who had won a substantial amount of money from ‘backing’ it. Got the above from the link below. :-) Hope this helps.
