I wouldn't let him go more than a month. Unlike pythons and boas, which are known for fasts of up to 6 months, garters have a much faster metabolism and will malnourish more quickly. Feed him about once a week, and give him enough so that you can see a just a slight bulge around his midsection after the prey item(s) have been completely swallowed. Minnows or goldfish will do, as will frogs and toads when available (garters seem to be impervious to toad venom).

Later.

Our garter snake has gone as much as a month without eating. It usually gets dormant before shedding it's skin, but once that happens, it seems ravinous. Our snake eats one or two minnows every 2 weeks. We've had our snake "Noodles" almost 3 years now. o~~~~~

all winter long in hibernation.

Otherwise it really depends on how large its last meal was and what temperature it is living in. I would think maybe 3 months would be as long as possible if its not hot and not active.

Mine go for 3-4months while hibernating(brumating). Just make sure they have fresh water available.
