Zack de la Rocha left the ground in between Battle of Los Ageneles and Renegades, he released this statement on Oct 18th, 2000:
"I feel that it is now necessary to leave Rage because our decision-making process has completely failed. It is no longer meeting the aspirations of all four of us collectively as a band, and from my perspective, has undermined our artistic and political ideal. I am extremely proud of our work, both as activists and musicians, as well as indebted and grateful to every person who has expressed solidarity and shared this incredible experience with us."
After which the remaining members of RATM joined up with Chris Cornell and formed Audioslave, or as I like to jokingly call it "Rage Against the Soundgarden".

As for why RATM broke up, it was actually Zack who broke them up. He felt that RATM wasn't being effective in mobilising people and he actually thought that the album "Battle of Los Angeles" would have a far greater effect than it did. He was disillusioned with the band after that album's release because generally all of the people who bought/listened to the album had no political or social interests at all, and ignored any message Zack put into the lyrics. I miss that Band!!!!!!!!!!

Because they fought a lot. Zach De La Rocha was going to do a solo album too. Have you ever heard it, cause I'm still waiting.

I read about how they weren't fulfilling their mission, politically I think. Can't remember where I read the article, was on the net somewhere. Bit about it below.

Better to end things while you're still creative and valid, rather than to become your own tribute band (KISS, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, etc.).

Its better to quit while you're at your peak than fizzle away into obscurity and 'revival' tours.
