Why do we as a speicies have such an appetite for drugs, booze etc?

Because they want to detach themselves from the worries and pressures of life.

They alter our brains in intriguing ways! There is the chemical dependence where your brain comes to expect the drug and throws a wobbler when it doesn't get it, and there are lifestyle issues where people want somewhere to go so they go to the pub, or kids smoke bits of an oxo cube and think they're high when it's really just the adrenaline from doing something risky.

all animals do i think. Have you heard of Datura? lets use it as an example. like many drugs man discovered it by observing animals, in this case the native amercians watched cows eat it, fall down for 12 hours then get up again to eat it again.

I thinking getting high is a natural diversion and the real question is how come weed is still illegal?

It's not just humans, there's a tree that is native to southern Africa whose fruit is extremely desirable to the local animals, the fruit ferments very quickly in the stomach and the animals get drunk. I watched a programme about it a few years ago, and these animals were literally clambering over themselves to get to this fruit, it was actually quite funny to see a drunk elephant!!

Booze/ganj - to destress.
Amphetamines - to boost confidence/ego/'energy'.
Ecstasy - to escape the monotony of the 9-5 week.
Hallucinogens- to take a trip by to our childhood.

its almost like we are being tempted between "light" and "dark". Which way you go is up to you, but then its still up to you to get yourself out of the darkside or keep yourself in the light....
temptation is the name of the game...how boring life would be if we wern't challenged on all levels of being!!
(Hell, we need a nip of vodka just to get through the working day sometimes! )

Because we seek out recreation, and drugs make people feel good. The problem is that too many people don't know or care that they aren't good for you if you get addicted.
