An award is Formal. eg a trophy, medal or certificate (some sort of long lasting and significant item) and is usually given at a ceremony as an acknowledgement of a notable achievement.
An reward is usually something informal and given in the form of money or material benefit, etc., for services rendered to the giver or community.
