There are different types of paint that come in spray form... solvent-based paints (often called "enamels") will dissolve polystyrene foam, especially if applied not just as a very-very-light spay.
An acrylic (water-based) spray should work, but sometimes there is a solvent in the propellant of a spray even though it isn't in the paint itself (I believe Krylon is one brand that doesn't).
You can try several light coats (always dry thoroughly), then proceed with regular spaying.
Or you can apply something water-based** first as a sealer thick enough to completely cover, then use any type of paint over it.
**acrylic paints... (permanent) white glues, thinned if desired and dried afterward... clear acrylic sealers for wood like Varathane... acrylic fingernail polish... etc.
Good luck!

Yes, it will definitely. I make Christmas angels using lots of different materials, styrofoam being one. To try to save time for myself I decided to skip one very important step for making the face and just sprayed the styrofoam with the paint. It shriveled up immediately. If you use a regular paper towel and apply white glue (the kind that dries clear), wrap it around the strofoam and smooth it out with your fingers, let it dry and then spray you won't have any problems.

you can spray a light dusting of the spray paint on it but to cover it completely it will shrivel. You're probably better off if you dip it into like acrylic paint. I think they have spray guns you can buy to put different paints in but I haven't gotten into that area.
