He was bled by leeches. Some accounts say he was bled 4 times in a 24 hour period, depriving him of approximately half of a standard adult blood supply.

It is interesting to note, however, that leeches aren't an entirely discredited medical tool and are still used in some circumstances today. They just overdid it with General Washington.

Bleeding him to death. Now they want to pump you full of it.
Some people who don't need that much blood they give it to them and it kills them. I didn't know that before but some people can die from blood transfusions. If there blood is totally gone that is one thing but to give it when they can survive without it is stupid and dangerous. That came from this doctor that it was a dangerous practice. That was used way to much.
