for example, say this person is writing an essay or a story and she goes from A to B and then she goes to C and then she returs to B, without following a straight line of thoughts. NO jokes, please, this is really important. Is DRIFT the word? Or do you have one that is even better? Thanks.

Lack of concentration is not uncommon. A person can "drift off" while thinking about something else but words like zoning out, spaced out and the Fraze..." I can't seem to focus" is very common as well. there are other words but I think this will work and keeping it clean at the same time. Good Luck.
