the exchange rate is about $1.85 to £1.
Why arent $1 burgers 60p, and why are the main burgers more in £ than they are even in $. In the UK burgers are about £3 on their own (over $5)

There are so many factors here. I am an American, but I have done some research on this. In American, the cost of running a Micky D's is nothing. On average the total cost to run a resturant is about 28% of total profit from that store. If that store does not fall within that profite bracket for a set amount of time, then McDonalds can pull that franchise, and close that location. To add to this McDonalds buys property that is dirt cheap. In the U.S. some land still sells for 60 dollars a square foot. It may be hard to find it, but you can. Also the cost of food is much less in the United states. True we eat crap beef, but at such a low price we can't say no. Also labor is much less in the U.S. So we can still pay an employee 5.50 an hour, and still get away with it. In the UK the cost of Property is out of this world. In some places I have heard that property goes for 1,300 dollars a square foot. I don't know what that translates to in pounds in the UK, but thats out of control for property. You would be suprised, but the price of food is about the same, in some areas it may be a bit more, but about the same as the US. Tax is what drives the price up. On Average the UK pays about 8% more for tax then the US. And the cost of living is so high that employees have to be payed higher wages just to scrape by. Overall the profite for most UK franchises is only about 52% of there total costs. Thats not very much compared to average Resturants around the world. The last thing that drives the price even further is that pracquet mentioned earlier. The UK has to follow this as well, though most resturants in the UK are corporate owned, and are not a franchise, they still hold the stores to the same standard of profite. And McDonalds is fast and in and out, so the UK resturants bank on this, sure you pay more, but you get it fast, and your on your way. There are other smaller factors that add to this, but these factors mentioned are huge bullet points in the price you pay.

I don't agree with a lot of people on here. We Brits pay tax on everything and I think its right. We get free health care, free operations which could be life saving procedures. So what if your burgers a pound or so more.
If every ones that bothered get something from the pound saver menu. Every ones a winner.

Because of income tax. The bods who serve and flip the burgers have a higher rate of income tax to pay in the uk therefore they won't work for the same rate of pay as they will in the US. So to offset the higher rate of pay against the profit margin MacD's raise the price of their products.

Prices vary between countries as indeed portions and meals. It used to be the same options all over but now there are variations . Certainly portions of chips are twice the size in Germany and in France than in England and in Prague you get butterscotch on your ice cream. Fluctuation in prices are partly due to the fall of the dollar but in any case since Mr MacDonald is American , he may prefer to be kinder to his nationals.

Cause you have to add in the cost of re-landscaping the Amazonian rain forest and buying all the barbed wire for the cattle. Shipping all the carcasses over as well costs $$$.

It's just the economy at work. The UK is one of the most expensive places in the world to live in.

Or you can think about it this way: How many cows do you think they can stuff on that island? :D

I believe they are trying to get all your money!
and they are also trying to locally source all the beef etc so it will be in local funds ie the pound.

also mcdees are cheap enough, when you can buy two cheeseburgers for a pound thats too cheap and easily accessable by too many people encouraging a high fat diet.
