The question that needs to be asked is why do people seem to always fear that which they do not understand?

Depending on your definition of self-awareness, you could say that there are computers that are already self-aware. (Trust me, definitions vary greatly on this.) And since definitions vary, who is to decide which definition is the one to limit?

The answer to this is that you should not limit the tools so much as the behavior of the people using the tools. In this respect it is like guns. In the hands of a hunter, a gun provides food for their family. In the hands of a thief, the gun is a tool of destruction. So should you limit guns, or the use of them?

Maybe at some point, but we're still far from the Terminator. There may come a day that technology will advance to a point that there may need to be some more ethical considerations, but at this point, I think we need to speed up our artificial intelligence development. I really need a robot maid, but for other people with REAL needs, AI could provide living assistance to the elderly and disabled.

Yes, because there already is an unwritten law in the public school system to promote students to the next grade, irrespective of test scores. For example, teachers in California were in jeopardy of not receiving federal funds if too many students failed exams, so the teachers rubber-stamped all students to pass. These uneducated students will then graduate and become the next generation of Democrats.

I agree, because at some point a computer technology will achieve this. And if humankind is not to their liking, watch out.

I think that's the moral of movies like "rise of the machines" and others.
