They are really not much different than any other species of turtle. The thing about soft shell turtles though, it they like to bury themselves in the sand. If you decide you must have a soft shell, make sure they have plenty of water and plenty of fine grain sand at the bottom of the aquarium. Honestly though, I would look into another type of turtle for entertainment, but it is pretty interesting to watch them bury themselves in the sand. So sure, go ahead get a soft shell turtle.

no, not unless you are an avid herp keeper. Think pond turtle times 50. Also, think about $500- 1000 for supplies for the adult sized turtle. They need quite a big tank.

They are very difficult to maintain properly. Their soft shells are prone to infections, and they prefer current and extremely clean water with a sand substrate, which is difficult to reproduce in captivity unless you have a really huge tank.
Also they get quite large >20"

turtles require a lot of care..more than people think. Please research this type of pet well before you make up your mind about getting one. also some turtles can live 30yrs+. Be sure you are ready to make this kind of commitment.

They can get pretty big needing a large enclosure and adults can give a nasty bite. I would go for another smaller species.

I'd have to say no to them being a good "pet" they aren't too friendly or clean.

They are a bit tricky and prone to fungal infections.

They carry some diseases so I would not get them with kids unless you are very careful and supervise them while handling them and make sure they wash their hands very well after handling them. I am a mother and would not take the risk.
