What is it you sell on your site? Services? Products? Are you global, national, local? There are about as many ways to promote your website as there are sites on the net! Just try not to Spam. It looks good, but $25 per 9mill emails every 15 minutes is not a legit thing!
www.craigslist.org is another good place that's free.
Over all the web is just like any other biz; you need to choose a method of advertising and then dominate it.
PPC can work, but if you're in a hot industry it'll get costly fast.
www.myspace.com is sort of cheesy, but it can help you gain exposure.
Then there's always direct mail, TV and radio!

You should hand out leaflets or try printing you compnay logo and web address on a business card and give them to people and ask local businesses and venues to hand them out as well. If the business card just has a name and a website address people will click on just to find out what it is. If the website is really interesting then you wll attract loads of business.
