Indeed, prisons shouldn't offer those privilages that the honest people in this world work so hard for. Also, what the hell are we doing providing criminals with the resources to come out of prisons stronger and in better shape than our police officers have time to do theirselves? Its just a bunch of BS. In the US it costs a lot more than the average joe makes in a year, to keep criminals in prison.

My husband is in prison. He is very frustrated with the lack of educational programs and work that could be available to inmates. But it's not all glorified like Hollywood makes it sound like it is. The Prison is NOT a free world.
Many states do not have the additional funding to contribute to rehabilitation and programs to help inmates transition into society. Often times they are just released and have no clue where to go, especially if they don't have family or friends to live with and to help them.
Even if you don't like it, our tax money is being used for prisoners. If there was no money for punishment and prisons, people would be out on the streets and doing whatever they like. Educational and vocational programs would be very useful for inmates to get involved with if there were money available. Why? Because when an inmate receives a chance to turn their life around to be a law-abiding and productive citizen when they are released back into society.
However if there was nothing for inmates to do they would start riots, cause more problems and when they are released they will break more laws because they don’t know how to cope after being institutionalized. Then our tax money is going to be used for people committing crimes time and time again. It would be a vicious cycle.
You would also be amazed about how much our taxes are being misused in the judicial system. Inmates and their families have to pay for personal hygiene products, medications, medical attention (and you can't have health insurance), paper, stamps, clothing, etc. My husband has managed to work on his GED, but I had to pay for it. The prison does NOT pay for soap, shampoo or shoes, etc, the family has to.
He is currently attending Bible study while he is in there. But there is not a whole lot else they can do with their time constructively. There should be more programs and education options along with vocational programs available so inmates can eventually become active and productive members of society.
Many of the people in there are good people who made really bad mistakes. People need to have consequences and face them. But you always have those other people who have no remorse and just should stay in prison to keep others safe. Inmates are not animals they are PEOPLE who made mistakes and paying their dues back to society by doing prison time. Not all people in prison are BAD people. But they are entitled to do their time because of their mistakes.

I take it you've never been, without tv, mail, and books, the prisoners would probably riot, plus they have their assigned jobs to keep them busy. Lack of comfortable bedding, the metal toilet without a seat, complete lack of privacy, and getting locked up with people you would normally cross the street to avoid, are also real special
I got arrested last year because I vaguely resembled some chick who stole some stuff from the dollar store a couple weeks earlier, even though I had a great aliby, I was in the hospital, I also had about 20 people who saw me at the hospital, I got sentenced to 50 days
It wasn't exactly Heaven, I still had to get my bills paid, my kid taken care of, There was no break from responsibility, in fact, I never had so much time to worry about each and every responibility I have. 50 days without my son WAS a living hell!
