Test it using some smoke, make sure the batteries are changed on a regular basis. It's cheaper to buy smoke detectors than to lose your home and possibly human lives also.

make sure that you clean the smoke detector at least once a year and change the battery. vacuum works best. i would change the smoke detector every 10 years 15 at the least.

You should replace the batteries every 6 months AND test it each time you replace the batteries. If it fails the test - it should be replaced.

You are supposed to test once a week and replace batteries every six months. As long as it works, no need to replace.

for the battery better yet every two years and for the detector maybe it depends upon its condition... not often though...
