Using lube definitely increases your fun--and decreases the chance you'll rub too hard! KY jelly and Astroglide are both available in Wal-Mart, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc. You can also find vending machines in some restrooms that sell single-use packets of lube. If you're in a small town, it can definitely be awkward, in which case you can get creative. Heh. I remember using vegetable oil, from my mom's pantry. The danger with using substitute lubes, though, is that you have a risk of getting a urinary tract infection, so be cautious. Of course, the big problem I've found is that clean up becomes much more of a chore. For me, using lube is something I'll do for a special occasion, otherwise it's just too much of a hassle.

You can masturbate with or without lubricant. Without lubricant you need to rely on a gentle touch and the flexibility of the skin of the penis. You move only the penis skin up and down over the head and shaft. If you want to get more aggresive and use your fist (simulates the vulva) you must use a lubricant. It can, for different guys. If you're circumcised it will probably reduce chaffing and irritation. Lubrication does not, however, have to be store-bought commercial lube. A lot of household products are safe, just as effective and just as easy to clean up. Hand lotion, baby oil and vaseline all work quite well.
Edit: As mentioned below, only use oil-based products (baby oil, vaseline, and many lotions) if you're using them for masturbation only. If and when you do have sex, refrain from using oil based lubrications with a condom because (also as mentioned below) they can severely deteriorate the strength of a condom and increase (if not make certain) the chance that it will break during intercourse. But if you're just getting acquainted with your hand, then have fun and use whatever you'd like.

You are getting some bad advice from previous answers.....
Do not use any oil-based lubricants, such as hand lotion, baby oil, or vaseline type products. They can cause several major problems....infection in the female vagina and breakdown of the integrity of a latex condom.
At your age, it would seem very unnecessary to add lubrication. If you do so, use only water-based or silcone based lubrication products.
If you are just used to masturbating, then use anything handy. Heck, at 16 you should get hard in about 2 seconds...just use the shower gel. But, do you know what you're missing by not being with a real woman?

HELL YES!!! It makes it so much better... here's the deal... if you are 16 years old than you are old enough to go to somewhere on your own..... go to Wal-Mart or Meijer or somewhere and pick up KY Lube Warming Jelly.... it's so simple... just walk by.. reach out.... grab it... and the bottle is small enough to hold in your hand and no one would see it.... than if you are embarassed about it just go through Self-Check out and no one will ever see!! That's what i used to do when i was like 14.... after a while you realize it's really dumb to hide it and be embarassed... haha... when you get in college there will be so much lube all over the place that you will never have to buy it again!!!
