I called in sick and left no reason. Although my employer requested my name, reason, and telephone number, I just stated that I would not be in and left my number. Five minutes later, my boss called me and asked why I wouldn't be in. Is it legal to be required to give a reason? - I live in Ohio.

Unless I am mistaking, NO! There is a law called H.I.P.P.A. that gives you the right to not discuss medical conditions with ANYONE you choose not to, and if you choose to, they must not discuss your condition with ANYONE ELSE without your permission. Do a Yahoo search for HIPPA laws. I am a business manager, and the most I can ask for of my employees is a note from a doctor that says when you are returning to work, and then I can not MAKE my employee go to a doctor if they don't want to. Attached is a link to a pdf file. At the bottom of the page is something interesting to read. If you work for a large enough company, ask your Human Resource office about their HIPPA law policy, and make a complaint if your supervisor violated the company policy or worse yet federal laws.

Here in New Hampshire you can call out SICK, and it's always a good idea to say WHY. If a person calls out after the 3rd day they are required to show proof from the doctor or a hospital and documentation from the doctor when you are able to return to work. If not, then the employer may fire the person. Although here in NH an employer can fire for no reason as well.

If you have sick time on the books and you only called out one day, they have no reason to fire you, unless there are other issues going on that have not been stated.

Of course it is. If you call in sick, you're expected to give a reason. Your employer is also authorized to demand a note from a doctor or other medical practitioner.

Otherwise you have to take a vacation day.

it all depends on the company, where i work if someone calls in sick, as long as they give reasonable time its okay. but if you have a habit of calling in sick, yes they can request reason, doctors note, plus most employers track their personel when they call in sick so i would give reason or you might lose your job if they have warrant

At my job (in Maine) we are required to have a doctor's note if our sick leave extends beyond three days. Other than that, unless you have a union contract that says otherwise, I should think he can ASK, but you probably don't have to tell him. May not be a bad idea, if you want to keep your job.

your employer may have been asking to see if you have something contagious, or your just not feeling like coming in to work.
your employer can ask for a doctor's release before allowing you to return to work any time you call in sick

well if you call in sick, then hypothetically speaking, you should tell your boss that the reason you are calling off is b/c you're sick.

yep, they can also ask for a note from the doctor. somepeople are under the impression that if you are ill enough to stay home from work, you are ill enough to go to the doctor.

DUH!! U CANNOT JUST CALL AND SAY I WILL NOT BE IN 2DAY. U ALWAYS HAVE TO TEL THEM WHY, EVEN IF U ARE NOT SICK.
