I look up and to the left and right and my left eye hurts. Like a pain behind my eye. Its been ocurring for a number of days and gets worse and then better and then not too bad and keeps going up and down in pain levels. I hope, "Its not a tumour" (Arnie Swartz voice)

I am not a doctor, but I get the same thing....it has always ended up being my sinus's acting up...take a mild antihistimine, (they have them that don't affect your blood pressure now)...and one with some pain relief in it...if this doesn't help, ...go to a doctor of course...but I have the same thing, and that is usually what it ends up being, part of my allergies. Merry Christmas, and Happy new year!

Since this discomfort occurs on motion, does rule out a few things.. What you have described is highly suggestive of an inflammatory condition to involve the 1st cranial nerve.. if there is a corresponding tenderness at the base of the skull (of the same side), you will have pretty good confirmation for the inflamed status. The nerve being irritated can be relieved by a simple chiropractic treatment.

Should that pain be resultant to the muscles of the eye, would only change the nerve involved.

You could have inflammation of the optic nerve head - this is responsible for carrying information about what you see back to your brain. I would suggest you call your eye doctor, describe your symptoms, and make an appointment to be seen. Better safe than sorry.
