All it means is that you have either native indian blood or asian blood in your genetics. The Mongolians ( as in the Great Khan kind) were known to have this type mark at birth- hence the name, Mongolian spot. It's really not a big deal, and varies in size from baby to baby. It can start out positively huge and look like the child has a tremendous bruise at the base of the spine, or be so tiny and faint it's nearly unnoticeable. It's possible one of you had it as a child, your mothers would surely know the answer to that. Normally it fades over the first few years of life, and disappears completely by school age. I don't think anyone truly knows why it is, other than it is associated with that genetic background and is not a hazard or any sort. Just be prepared for it to take other people by surprise if they change the diaper and notice it. Most people aren't aware of it, and will take it for a bruise. I know I nearly had heart failure as a student nurse working in the newborn nursery the first time I saw one. The child was born to Indian parents and my supervisor had seen them before, fortunately. But aside from the spot, I'm sure he has a dear little face to go with the bare spotted bottom.

There are many different reasons for differing colouration amongst people of African or Asian descent. Many slave owners raped their female slaves and also got them pregnant, and this sometimes causes anomalies such as lighter skinned children. It could also depend on which part of Africa your ancestry comes from, certain people from Africa are lighter than others.
In British India, especially in the early 19th century, English men were encouraged to embark on relationships with Indian girls, resulting in many mixed race families, many of these men converted to Hinduism and Islam. Either way, if you are of Indian descent it could be as a result of this that your son is lighter than you or your husband.
Regarding the birth mark, I wouldn't worry about it, skin pigment problems are very common amongst the Indian/Pakistani community, I worked with a guy who white blotches on his hands and it wasn't a problem to him, and wasn't a source of ridicule amongst his colleagues.
