I've lived in LA a number of times...it's got more cons than pros, I'm afraid. School systems are below standard, the state itself is pretty poor, its politics has always been crooked, crime (esp in the southern part) higher than average, etc.
If LA wants to be looked up to, the people and gov't of the state need to take action to change it.

Sometimes it's just a lack of understanding on their part when they say things like that. Some people always have to have someone to look down upon to make themselves feel better as well. Some people also think all Southern people are the same, which is probably as ignorant as saying that all African-Americans, Euros or whatnot are the same. I personally do think the media (which is based in New York for the most part) has a great deal to do with that. Cultural differences aren't respected as much as they should be by larger media outlets.

I don't know about worst state, but there was a study saying it was the unhealthiest based on teh amount of overweight people, etc.
It also is a very poor state compared to others and a lot of corruption within the state government. Yeah, other states have their issues, but LA in comparision analysis may have more.

i live in thibodaux, louisana(south louisiana). sure, this state may have problems with crime, schools, health issues, etc...but thats mostly based out of new orleans, and i live 50 miles out of new orleans and i have to say, yes we may have a few problems, but when it all comes down to it, its home to all of us who live here and if people would only have the patients to stop and look at our lifestyle, culture, foods, and how we know how to have fun, south louisiana is a very good place, sure it may not look good on the cover but you cant judge a book by its cover. down here we know how to make good out of anything bad and always have fun and dont worry about stupid problems on the other side the world, but if people dont like that than they can shove it because when you are born and raised in south louisiana and go to the other states and see how they are just "another state" and our home is different in a good way it makes you feel good about home. we like being different and having our own culture and come'on, who doesnt like a good gumbo, or somome fresh gulf boiled shrimp, crawfish, or crabs! so all of you "other states" can shove it, because this is our home and we like it the way it is!!

Louisiana and Mississippi have big problems. I have lived in Louisiana and now live in Mississippi, so I know. We know this doesn't mean our states are completely horrible but unfortunately people outside of our states see it this way.
