A sandbox is a computer or computer network used to test software.

You use it anyplace where software is being developed.

It is not a technology or a programming language. It is a methodology: Test your software on a system that, if your software destroys the system, it's no big deal.

Sandboxes are popular because they limit the damage caused by bad software development. A sandbox contains no valuable data. It is outside the normal computer network used by a business.

Therefore, if the software being tested goes haywire and destroys the sandbox, it's no big deal; nothing important is lost.

A sandbox is needed to limit the damages that might be caused by bad software.

Sandboxes are not a great revolution in technology, but many software programs that have been great revolutions have been tested on sandboxes.

A Sandbox is a controlled environment, where you can test programs that could otherwise destroy important data if used in a real life environment.

If you run a malicious program (e.g. a Virus) in a Sandbox, it can destroy as much it wants. The Sandbox keeps the Virus contained, and provides a simulated environment to destroy, that looks real to the virus.

If you found out enough about the virus, you shut down the sandbox.

The virus should not escape onto your real environment with a properly configured sandbox.

VMWare is a program that simulates a whole PC. You can install Windows or other OSes on this virtual PC and it becomes your Sandbox.
You can install Software you want to test, and if it thrashes your Sandbox, you just roll back the virtual machine and try something other.

Without a Sandbox the program could thrash the important data on your PC.
